Grandparents Whitehurst Visit, Sept. 2010

the whirlwind that is the whitehursts descended again on adelaide - this time in september. we had a total blast, got a lot done, BARELY survived the frigid temperatures, and welcomed in canon's first real smile (i don't think that's just gas!) mom and dad did inform me, however, that if they visit again, it won't be during the winter!

my folks proved that once a parent, always a parent and parents will do anything they can for their babies... getting to australia takes a long time, so when you come, you stay for awhile and try to tour the country as much as possible. mom and dad had wisely considered a trip to the tropics in northern queensland (a delightful change from chilly south australia and our poorly insulated home - you can't be a softie from colorado and expect to survive here; though colorado is in fact quite a bit farther away from the ol' equator than south aus). anyway, they very sweetly and readily deferred the adventure when i asked them to stay the entire time with us in adelaide. so, canon's grandma gardner was here for his first major milestone - birth! - and gran whitehurst fielded his first smiles and coos. success!

we did a lot of other stuff too, though...

first meeting

nova got some SWEET cowgirl boots from aunt lolo

dorothy and toto's house did NOT just land on nova

went to the "show" (i.e. fair) and checked out a lot of farm animals

had so much fun that we passed out on grandaddy's shoulder at the show - that's not the first (or last) time dad has had to carry one of his sleeping baby girls on his shoulder

no visit to adelaide is complete without a trip to henley beach

most of you know that canon's middle name is heysen, after south australian painter and naturalist hans heysen. herr heysen's home, "the cedars", is in hahndorf - a small town in the adelaide hills that was settled by german immigrants. to commemorate canon's birth and middle-namesake, we went spent a night in hahndorf and toured the grounds at "the cedars". mom and dad gave canon (but we get to enjoy it for now) a heysen chalk and charcoal print of red gum trees and a beautiful book that portrays many of his paintings.

trying to learn something from the tour guide at the cedars (i look focused, but most of the talk was unable to penetrate my nursing-mom bubble of duh-dom) (for those of you who are parents and used to consider yourselves witty and intelligent, you'll like how i blamed mental dullness on nursing - as if it all comes back when you stop...)

i had the brilliant idea to get the kids' hand and foot prints on a canvas - nova loved it...
...canon didn't think it was so fun.

we spent a long weekend in victor harbor, enjoying the beach, whale watching and visiting pertaringa vineyard in mclaren vale on the way home.
canon recognizes the foot fist way (thanks to uncle jerome and aunt erica)

what three year old (what any ager?!) doesn't find tide pools fascinating?

canon's first flight... although born here, canon does not get dual citizenship (although he does have a very cool birth certificate with kookaburras, kangaroos, emus, etc on it), so we flew to melbourne (for the day) to go to the US consulate (because there is no consulate in adelaide - a CAPITAL CITY. sheesh.) to apply for his passport and report "an american birth abroad". the upswing was that he slept for a REALLY long time in his car seat after we got home, and thus began his current tenure as a "baby-that-gets-put-down-for-the-night-in-his-car-seat". hope he doesn't grow out of it too soon...

a visit to cleland wildlife park - where one can get his/her australian fauna fix - to pet the koala and feed the kangaroos.

boy, did i dress him like a boy or what!? for memory's sake: this was at the south australian national footy league grand premier where the norwood redlegs lost (boo hoo!) to the central bulldogs (those bogans!). tough day.

mom and dad FINALLY got some nice weather - on their last day! spring can be so catty! - so we visited semaphore (an adelaide beach and suburb) and...

...enjoyed some great fish and chips (lotta chips there)...

...and rode the little coal-powered steam engine there (smelled like D&SNG!)

happy, happy gran. happy, happy baby.

the boys hard at work

it was sad to see mom and dad go (and frightening as i am now responsible for BOTH kids ALONE for four days of the week. how is this legal?!) but as always, SO much fun. and happily, we will be - pay attention here! - in UT/CO/NM for six weeks over christmas holidays. those are going to be some seriously ugly tele turns, but seeing family and friends will be beautiful!

a few more pics... (because there's just not enough, are there?)

a bolo tie and a pendleton blanket - do i hear the southwest calling?

he looks as big as she does! (actually, at three months, he already weighs more than nova did at six months! that explains the back - and neck and shoulder - pain)

fam

nice boots, cowgirl.

cheers all.

Kickin' it with Canon

how much caffeine does the american pediatric association approve of for breast-feeding women? well, they say to try to keep it under 300 mg - about 3 cups per day. oddly, they did not consider the health and safety of the infant being cared for by a completely dysfunctional, under-caffeinated mother of a newborn. still, i keep to the guidelines and my third cup is USUALLY decaf and if there is a (gasp!) fourth cup, it is definitely decaf and only necessary because its predecessor was also decaf. sigh. its the little things that get you through, you know?

which reminds me - the little things at the center of (our) attention right now are nova and canon. canon is already (!) five weeks in this world. payton and i are still grossly under-slept and i fear the day he goes back to work for a full five days for many weeks in a row! still, canon treats us pretty well and has stretched his every-two-hour nighttime feeds out to about every three hours (sometimes) - we fervently pray it does not stop there. the upside to the newborn-second-child's sleep pattern is that it makes nova's sleep pattern - for which we still celebrate a full night's worth of uninterrupted sleep - look pretty successful if she only wakes up once or twice. and hey, we're already awake - or were recently or will be shortly - so no dramas, right?

anyway, canon's first month (and OUR first month, for that matter - as a family of four) was pretty fun...

nova played in the backyard, wore her (well, my) snorkeling goggles (including in the car and into the restaurant to pick up some carry out dinner) and painted a canvas for canon's room (it's a picture of a platypus). canon mostly slept.

soon not to be sleeping. nova just can't resist touching that soft baby hair!

oh! he's awake!

august is birthday party month here, so we went to zara harrington's fourth birthday - a princess party.
canon sleeping (wisely) at the princess party

and we went to jack's third birthday - jack is nova's best friend at school...
...they're talking about starting a band together. they're having trouble deciding if they'll go electric or acoustic.

mmm, cake. at 1030 am. no nap.

nova's beautiful locks got trimmed - those split ends just had to go! i have no idea how to layer a haircut - but the set up looks professional, eh? - but we tried... and neither, it turns out, can i cut in a straight line (her bangs have a very sassy un-evenness to them). but emilee - just because vivian has those wild, forgiving curls....

snuggling with dad.

teaching canon the important things in life - how to give high five!

sibs... i see lots of these types of pics over the years...

most little girls like to dress up like fairies or princesses... ours likes to dress up like a bag lady. future birthday party theme?

family dinner! this was a rare moment - and it lasted about that long - as dinner usually consists of one of us holding canon, the other inhaling dinner and helping nova with hers, then a swap. the last one to eat dinner has to eat alone, but hey, at least the food is cold.
